HEY VERMONT ARTISTS!

77ART is partnering with Roots Restaurant to provide micro-residencies to artists who are interested in creating large scale paintings as a public performance in Rutland VT.

Due to COVID19 we were not able to run our regular programming but recently we were contacted by Donald Billings, the owner of Roots Restaurant, who asked for help with what we think could be a very interesting mural/live painting project. Here is what he has proposed:

Roots Restaurant is expanding this fall in order to accommodate social distancing guidelines. Roots is sponsoring 77ART artists to paint/create mural-sized art on the walls during prime dinner hours (5:30-8:30). This initiative will create energy and enthusiasm for a local business and see them through the difficulty of serving our community during the pandemic. Watching artists work will inspire Root’s patrons and give them something to think and talk about. The project is poised to generate positive press both from local papers and public radio. From the artists perspective the project stands to create connections between the artists and broader community, lead to other community based-projects, become a space for artists to work together and create camaraderie, offer artists experience and creative freedom working on the large walls, and finally, be just plain fun.

The residency includes:

  • $20 per hour of painting time

  • Chef prepared dinner

  • Paints and other miscellaneous basic supplies

  • 12 hours of work time - divided into 4 nights, from 5:30-8:30 each night.

  • Scheduling can be flexible to accommodate the artist’s needs. Nights can be separated (one or two nights per week) or back-to-back (4 nights in a row). However the space can only accommodate two artists per night. No painting on Sundays or Mondays.

  • Option to use 77ART studios during non-painting hours

  • Option to lodge in 77ART boarding house during your stay

Work Criteria:

  • Creative freedom - no mock-ups or plans necessary

  • No politics or nudity. This is a family environment

  • Flexible wall space size - up to (roughly) 10ft. X 20ft.

One important thing to note is that because this project is focused on the experimental/performative aspect of the work (the process of making it - as opposed to the finished project) these murals are temporary - after the first group of artists finish their work, the murals will be painted over, and a new group of artists will come in and start fresh. We see this as one of the most exciting aspects of this project!

The project will begin with the first group of artists scheduled to do their work over the course of about four weeks, beginning September 22nd.

If you are interested in this project please let me know. I am happy to respond via email or phone (let me know the best number/time to contact you). I can answer questions or talk things over with you if you need more information.
